Leading from Within - Building Leadership Skills for Emerging Non-Profit Leaders

Take the next steps to pursue or advance your management career by learning about the knowledge and skills required to excel as a leader in your organization. If you want to rise through the ranks of your organization into management, or if you want to become more effective in your current leadership role, you'll need to cultivate a specialized set of skills and a particular mindset.

Leading from Within is a 3-day workshop designed for those who are planning on, or have just begun leading a non-profit program or volunteer team. In this course you will develop skills to prepare you for your new environment and the common pressures faced by the non-profit sector. You will move forward with an informed and strengthened foundation, critical leadership competencies, and new resources that will help strengthen you own leadership journey.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this program, you will be able to:

Explain the environmental forces and pressures that will challenge non-profit leadership in the coming decade

Describe the difference between management and leadership and assess your current leadership competency levels

Use your organization's values, vision and mission to build an engaged, adaptive team

Think strategically to encourage innovation, problem-solve and make decisions

Evaluate your emotional intelligence

Identify strategies to manage your time and stress

Practice communication techniques to manage conflict

Use various performance management techniques to motivate your team

Apply skills to hold difficult conversations to improve performance

Program managers, volunteer managers, coordinators and anyone who is interested in developing their leadership skills.


Jackie Hunt is a training consultant, community leader and Volunteer Manitoba's Executive Director. She is also the co-founder of The Kindred Project, a non-profit organization that provides feminine hygiene products for over 300 women in need each and every month.

For the past seven years, Jackie was an elected official in the RM of Ritchot. She began her involvement with the RM as a counselor and then as the mayor. She believes in the power of strong communities and service to others, and she has built a strong reputation working with government, community leaders, organization and individuals who share those same values.

Jackie has over 20 years of experience in adult education, providing training for individuals and organizations on leadership, communication, emotional intelligence and goal setting. She has also delivered training on board governance and non-for-profit organizational development. She is an experienced public speaker and has delivered keynotes and plenary sessions at conferences across the province.

In her current role as Executive Director, Jackie combines her extensive experience in community engagement and her strong leadership style to position Volunteer Manitoba as the leader and catalyst for engaging all Manitobans.
