Organizational Description: We are a volunteer run organization that arranges an outdoor curling bonspiel on the Red River in Winnipeg over the first full February weekend (Fri-Sun). Funds raised from the bonspiel support the Heart and Stroke Foundation and HOPE worldwide Canada. First established in 2001 with 11 teams at the first event in 2002, we have had as many as 72 teams participate in our annual bonspiel event, which makes us the largest outdoor curling bonspiel in Canada. We still have room to grow with the wonderful support from all the great volunteers we meet.

Description of Duties:

The Financials & Control Lead plays a key role in overseeing the financial planning, tracking, and reporting for the organization or event. This volunteer position ensures that all financial processes are transparent, accurate, and aligned with the nonprofit's mission and regulatory obligations. The role is ideal for someone with a background in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping who is passionate about community involvement and responsible stewardship.


Key Responsibilities:




  • Budget Management




    • Develop and manage the event-specific budget in collaboration with the planning committee.



    • Track and report actual expenses vs. budget, flagging any variances or concerns.



    • Provide regular financial updates to the organizing committee.




  • Financial Controls & Oversight




    • Ensure appropriate financial controls are in place (e.g., dual approvals, expense tracking).



    • Monitor incoming and outgoing funds, ensuring accuracy and transparency.



    • Implement and maintain clear record-keeping practices for audit-readiness.




  • Revenue & Donations




    • Assist in managing funds raised through sponsorships, donations, ticket sales, raffles, and other income sources.



    • Vendor & Payment Coordination




      • Support invoice management and ensure timely payment to vendors or service providers.



      • Work with procurement or logistics leads to validate expense claims.




    • Year-End Reporting & Handover




      • Prepare a final financial report summarizing event income, expenses, and outcomes.



      • Provide documentation and guidance for future leads or treasurers.




   
Skills Required:

Skills & Qualifications:




  • Background in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field



  • Experience with basic budgeting, financial reporting, and cash flow management



  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial practices and controls preferred



  • Strong attention to detail, integrity, and confidentiality



  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets or basic accounting software



  • Excellent communication and organizational skills



  • Ability to work collaboratively with a volunteer team
