Organizational Description: | LITERACYWORKS a non-profit adult literacy program. LiteracyWORKS envisions a Winnipeg in which all adults are literate and able to participate fully in their cultural, economic and social worlds. Through classes and one-to-one tutoring, and based on the individual needs of each student, LiteracyWORKS provides people with essential literacy skills to enhance self-sufficiency and quality of life. These include reading, writing, numeracy and oral communications skills. LiteracyWORKS aims to provide services in a way that is student-centred, professional, safe, supportive, inclusive and celebratory. |

Description of Duties: | Volunteers in adult literacy programs support adults in improving reading, writing, speaking, and basic math skills. They may tutor individuals or work with small groups and use educational tools. Volunteers also provide encouragement, foster a supportive learning environment, and help learners build confidence. Additional duties can include maintaining records, and participating in training and team meetings. Volunteers play a key role in empowering adults to reach personal, educational, or employment goals through improved literacy and life skills. Consistency and dedication are highly valued. |
Skills Required: | Cultural sensitivity, patience, and strong communication skills are essential. As well, having a nonjudgmental, positive attitude for helping others is also key to being a volunteer. |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | Volunteering in an adult literacy program builds strong communication, teaching, and interpersonal skills. Volunteers learn to explain concepts clearly, listen actively, and adapt to diverse learning styles. They gain experience in using educational tools, including digital platforms. The role also enhances patience, empathy, and cultural sensitivity while fostering teamwork and collaboration with staff and other volunteers. Problem-solving and adaptability are developed through addressing individual learner needs and challenges. These transferable skills are valuable for personal growth, career advancement, and working in education, social services, or community-focused roles. |
