Description of Duties:

We are looking for Assistant Coaches in the Following Sports:


- Swimming


- Jr Basketball


- Jr Athletics


- 5 Pin bowling


- FUNdamentals


Program Description: Do you have a passion for coaching and connecting with youth and adults in sport? Special Olympics Manitoba is looking to recruit volunteers for coach and programs volunteers! Join the team of program volunteers and coaches who directly provide training for athletes in eighteen different sports. They work with athletes to improve basic motor skills, teach sport-specific skills, and prepare athletes for competition. Be a part of athletes achieving their goals and help capture the spirit of Special Olympics!


Goals:




  • Instruction in sport skills





  • Competition at an appropriate level when certified as a coach





  • Modeling and instilling socially appropriated behavior including fair play





  • Learning the role of Head Coach via mentorship



Responsibilities and expectations:




  • Attend practice and competition events on a regular basis





  • Communicate with head coach regarding practices and competitions





  • Adhere to the plans for the head coach (weekly & yearly)





  • Devote adequate time to preparation of athletes for competitions





  • Supervise activities when deemed necessary by head coach





  • Know all safety concerns of athletes (Atlantoaxial Instability, epilepsy, asthma, seizures, etc.)





  • If an incident occurs, following the incident reports procedure in Policy Manual.





  • Attend coaching conferences and clinics as necessary to upgrade coaching skills


   
Skills Required:

Requirements:




  • Passion for sport





  • Knowledge about the sport you are coaching





  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is an asset





  • Transportation to get to the venues





  • Volunteers under the age of 18 must have permission from a parent of legal guardian





  • 16 years of age to be an assistant coach

Training and Supervision:






  • NCCP SOC Competition Coach Workshop within the first year





  • Reasonable knowledge of chosen sport and complete sport technical training in the first two (2) years of coaching





  • NCCP Introduction to Competition A within the first two (2) years of coaching





  • Complete and pass the Making Ethical Decisions (MED) Evaluation within the first two (2) years of coaching





  • Upon completion of these courses, the title of "Coach" will be given





  • Reporting to the head coach

Time Commitment:
Evening
Weekend

Once a week, October - April. Some weekends may be required for competitions.
