If you are looking for a rewarding volunteer position and have accounting or a financial background, consider joining the Winnipeg Crime Stoppers team as the role of Board Treasurer. The Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is a non-profit, charitable organization who works with the public, media and law enforcement to prevent and stop crime. The Board is looking for personable, motivated and dedicated candidates with the desire to promote a community-based program that effectively assists in the solution of crimes creating a safer City to live and work in.


The Board Treasurer should have working knowledge of QuickBooks, ability to present financial information to the Board, and be available to attend meetings on a quarterly basis.

Volunteer Opportunity Details


Founded in 1984, the WCS has been a stable and trusted presence in the City of Winnipeg with its programs and initiatives in the fight against crime. Our programs are funded by public donations and initiated and managed by volunteer positions resulting in the programs' successes and achievements. The Board continues to grow and expand its community outreach through new partnerships, marketing initiatives, public events and fundraisers.


The role of the Treasurer is responsible for the organization's financial management, oversight, and reporting. The treasurer works with the executive members of the Board of Directors to ensure appropriate use of funds.


The Treasurer has the following responsibilities:



  • General financial oversight

    • Prepare, monitor, and present quarterly budgets, accounts, and financial statements to the Board of Directors

    • Ensure up-to-date recordkeeping of all transactions and accounts

    • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation or reporting requirements


  • Funding and fundraising

    • Ensure the use of funds and grants complies with conditions set by funding bodies

    • Ensure fundraising complies with relevant legislation or applicable governing bodies


  • Financial planning and budgeting

    • Prepare and present budgets and financial forecasts

    • Advise on financial implications, recommendations or suggestions on strategic and operational plans


  • Financial reporting

    • Present quarterly reports on the organisation's financial position

    • Present fiscal year-end financial statements and an annual budget at the Annual General Meeting (March 31 year-end)

    • Advise on the organisation's reserves and investment policy/strategy

    • Prepare the annual T3010 Registered Charity Information Return and related filings as required for Canada Revenue Agency compliance.


  • Bookkeeping and recordkeeping

    • Maintain appropriate systems for bookkeeping and payments

    • Ensure all parties handling board finances maintain proper records and documentation related thereto.


   
Skills Required:

  • Excellent organizational skills regarding documentation and file or recordkeeping

  • Strong verbal and visual financial reporting skills

  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex financial information

  • Valuable time management and prioritization skills

  • In-depth knowledge of QuickBooks

  • Solid understanding of budget planning and finance

  • Substantial value for ethics and trustworthy operations

  • Experience using different methodical approaches for managing finances

  • Experience with grant search and writing an asset but not required.

  • Applicants with CPA preferred

  • Monthly evening Board Meetings on the 4th Wednesday of the month, excluding July and December

  • Treasurer commitment to attend Board Meetings and to present quarterly financial reports, via in-person or via conference (phone or video)

  • Quarterly accounting services work is approximately 15-20 hours

  • Treasurer serves a minimum of a 2-year term
