Description of Duties:

Volunteer Classroom Mentors will assist Introduction to Canadian Education staff deliver orientation activities to newly arrived refugee children and youth ages 6 to end of high school who have not yet attended school in Canada.

Program runs Monday to Thursday and volunteers are needed between 8:45-3:30 PM. Program components include school preparedness, orientation to Winnipeg, English language skill development, social recreational activities, addressing common settlement stressors, and computer classes

Volunteer Classroom Mentors help assist in the delivery of individual and group classroom activities, support with the delivery of our orientation curriculum, help ensure that all classroom materials and supplies are prepared for each activity, help with classroom set-up and clean-up, work directly with newcomer clients to develop supportive and productive relationships, and prepare clients for entry into the Canadian school system.

   
Skills Required:

Responsible, reliable, patient, tolerant, committed to the program, must be a positive role model (no criminal record or current gang activity). Experience working with youth an asset but not necessarily required.

   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Work with youth, gain leadership and communication skills. Learn about issues facing immigrants and refugees.

Morning and/or afternoon, 3.5 hours per week minimum 3 months.
