Organizational Description: | Frontier College is a national literacy organization operating a wide variety of programs in locations across Canada. We recruit and train volunteer tutors who assist children, youth, and adults to acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills. We also partner with community-based organizations to help them establish and deliver literacy programs that meet the specific needs of their communities and participants. As Canada's original literacy organization, Frontier College has been recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with Canadian children, youth, and adults from coast to coast to coast since 1899. Our programs have helped millions of Canadians improve their literacy skills, and we would love to welcome your involvement in continuing this meaningful work. |

Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | We are currently recruiting volunteers to support our in-person after school programs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 4:00pm - 5:15pm. As a volunteer you will support students in grade 1 to 5 with their literacy activities in our weekly after-school program. The program runs at various schools in Winnipeg such as Kent Road, Salisbury Morse Place, Lord Selkirk, and River Elm School. The program is run by one of our literacy interns and supported by volunteers. The Intern will plan all the activities and share them with the volunteers prior to the program. The volunteers will then work with a small group of children to focus on reading, writing, and numeracy. United For Literacy will provide free training to anyone accepted as a volunteer. We will continue to provide you with any additional support or resources throughout your tutoring experience. We can also sign off on your volunteer hours and provide a reference. |
Skills Required: | We are seeking individuals who: - Want to help others improve their literacy skills - Enjoy working with children - Are comfortable working with learners from diverse backgrounds and literacy levels - Are committed and reliable on a weekly basi. |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | As a volunteer with United for Literacy you will gain: - Teaching experience - Literacy tutoring skills - Experience working with learners from a variety of background, including individuals with learning disabilities, and different literacy levels. - First assess to job postings. |
