Organizational Description: | Child and Family Services of Western Manitoba is a private, non-profit, community-based charitable agency, directed by a community-elected and community-represented Board of Directors. Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | -ParentChild+ is an early literacy program designed to support parents in their role as their child's first and most important teacher. -A Home Visitor is matched with a parent and their two-year-old child, and visits the family's home twice a week, for half an hour. -The Home Visitor brings books and toys to the home and models play and positive interaction between parent and child. |
Skills Required: | -You enjoy being around children, and want to help them succeed. -You have a non-judgmental attitude. -You are flexible and can adapt to a child-led play environment. -You can maintain boundaries while building a strong relationship with a family. |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | -Gain experience within a social services agency. -Expand knowledge of child development and the importance of the parent-child bond. -Enjoy the satisfaction of making a difference in the life of a child and family. -Gain experience beneficial to career goals including early education, social work and health care. -Learn skills that can be applied to strengthen your connection with children in your own life. |
Age: | 18-30, 31-54, 55+ |
Time Commitment: | Daytime, Evening -Initial training is about 12 hours spread over several evenings or weekend days. This typically happens in October. -Total weekly commitment is about three hours, which includes two home visits, one weekly meeting, filling out a brief report after each visit, and travel time. -Visit times are arranged to suit the schedule of the family and Home Visitor. -We ask that a Home Visitor is willing to commit to one program year, which typically runs from October through April. |
