We are a not-for-profit organization that offers a wide range of programs and services to support individuals and their families.

St.Amant programs include a large residence for complex-care, more than 50 community sites and homes, the St.Amant Research Centre, the St.Amant School and River Road Child Care, a community child-care centre. We offer effective programs for children with autism and also for families who care for an individual with a developmental disability at home.

We strive to enhance the quality of life and self-determination for the thousands of individuals and families we serve each year. We are also a member of the Catholic Health Network.

Description of Duties:

The Program Assistant; Monday - Friday 9:30 - 11:30 am or 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm promotes the Mission and Values of St.Amant and the goals and objectives of the Developmental Services Program in which they are involved by assisting clients to participate more fully in program activities to maximize each person's well-being and quality of life.

After we receive a completed application form, we may ask you to come for an interview. Qualified applicants may be required to attend a second interview depending on placement. During the interview, you will be asked to provide two (2) references who are not Family Members.

Many of our placements require interactions with others; we ask our volunteers to be able to follow directions, give directions and to express themselves clearly and concisely in the English language. We have found a benchmark of Level 7 or higher works well for our volunteer placements in reading; writing; listening and speaking.

If a successful match is made between your skills and abilities, Volunteer Services will offer you a volunteer position. If you decide to accept the offer, we will discuss a start date with you after completing the orientation; completion of references checks and screening.

All volunteer placements are done through the volunteer office including reassignments.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a volunteer to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the volunteer may be required to walk, sit and stand for long periods of time, stoop, kneel and push. Must be able to push an individual supported in a wheelchair.

Skills Required:

Must be 12 years or older; strong interpersonal skills; patient and willing to ask questions. Must be able to physically push adults in wheelchairs. Must show responsibility in meeting commitment and being reliable; must be able to follow instructions, be flexible when program activities change and take initiative where appropriate.

Parental consent is needed for individuals under the age of 15.

   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Gain experience supporting individuals who have developmental disabilities; opportunity to develop rewarding relationships and a reference will be given after completion of 100 volunteer hours.

All adult volunteers will need a Criminal Record Check, Adult and Child Abuse Registry Check; we do offer to submit this paperwork on your behalf for a $40 fee and once 40 volunteer hours have been completed with us you will receive a full refund. (We do not offer reimbursement for those who are placed in our volunteer program and have done the CRC, CAR & AAR on their own).
