Meeting Management and Minute Taking

The meeting Chair and Secretary work hand in hand to run great meetings. This workshop is designed to help you work as a team to improve the quality of your meetings and ensure what transpired within that meeting is recorded in an appropriate format and level of detail.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common meeting guidelines including rules of order
  • Describe the Chair's role, responsibilities and expectations and how to establish a partnership with the Executive
  • Explain the steps in preparing for the meeting
  • Describe the various types of meetings and the best style of minutes for these meetings and the information contained in each type
  • Identify various styles of decision-making including the consensus process
  • Identify the process for In-camera meetings and recording minutes of these meetings
  • Explain how to record action items in the minutes


Kevin Freedman is a national young leader in the areas of governance and non-profit leadership. After several years in executive positions he moved into academia and is a member of the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Winnipeg where he teaches courses on non-profit management, corporate governance, ethics, and organizational behavior. He has substantial governance experience in public, non-profit, and private organizations dating back more than 15 years. Currently he sits as a Trustee with the Winnipeg School Division, Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and Director at Assiniboine Credit Union, Chair of the Board at the Sexuality Education Resource Centre, and is a director or committee member of several local and national organizations inducing Greenpeace and the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg.

Kevin is also an award winning volunteer and community leader. He has been recognized with a Governor General's Medal for service, the YMCA Canada Peace Medal, and is a two-time finalist for the Future Leaders of Manitoba award. Kevin holds a master's degree in non-profit management from the Walden School of Public Administration, is an Accredited Canadian Credit Union Director, and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors and the International Association for Volunteer Effort.
