Online: Fundamentals of Qualifying for Charitable Status

What is involved in applying for charitable status and being a registered charity, and is it right for our organization? What are the four heads of charity recognized at law, and do our purposes qualify? What is the difference between charitable purposes and activities?
This workshop will answer these questions and help participants to understand the terminology used by lawyers and the Charities Directorate of Canada Revenue Agency when discussing incorporation, charitable purposes and the Application for Charity Status. We will also review at a high level the Application and its various components.
Participants will learn to enunciate the purposes of their organization and determine whether the purposes are charitable. They will understand the different activities of their organization, including their charitable programs, political activities, fundraising, and administration. They will know the other prerequisites to obtaining charitable status like satisfying the public benefit requirement and avoiding undue private benefits, and be better prepared to approach the Application process.

Facilitator:
Florence Carey is a lawyer who operates a solo practice focussed on charity and not-for-profit law in Winnipeg, Manitoba. To that she brings the skills and experience from years as a tax partner at a regional firm. She is recognized as a Best Lawyer in Canada, is the vice-chair of the CBA Charities and Not-for-Profit Law Section, a member of the Technical Issues Working Group of Canada Revenue Agency's Charities Directorate, a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, and on the Winnipeg boards of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners. Currently completing the ICD.D designation with the Institute of Corporate Directors, she serves as a volunteer director on the boards of The Lung Association, Manitoba and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. She is a frequent writer and lecturer on charity law subjects.
