Organizational Description: Sturgeon Heights Community Centre (SHCC) offers a wide variety of year-round sports, programs, classes, and rental options.
With two outdoor rinks, soccer fields, a large multi-purpose room, two smaller meeting rooms, and a full gymnasium available, there is wide variety of programming and events offered.
Through the years, SHCC has been, and continues to be, an integral part of the Sturgeon Height community, hosting summer camps, tournaments, carnivals, and much more.
SHCC is one of approximately 75 community centres in the City of Winnipeg. SHCC works collaboratively with other community centres for sports registrations and other activities.

Project Overview


The Community Centre is seeking an experienced Web Developer to redesign and rebuild its Wordpress website to provide a modern, user-friendly, mobile-responsive experience for community members, volunteers, staff, and facility users.


The new website will serve as the primary digital hub for the community centre and must support online service requests, event management, facility booking inquiries, and communication with community members.


Position Summary


The Web Developer will be responsible for planning, designing, developing, testing, and deploying an updated Wordpress website for the Community Centre. The successful candidate will work closely with stakeholders to gather requirements, create a modern website design, implement required functionality, and provide knowledge transfer and documentation upon project completion. This includes recommendations for hosting and ongoing maintenance.


Key Responsibilities


Website Design & Development



  • Implement and customize an existing Wordpress template to create a modern, accessible, and responsive website.

  • Create an intuitive navigation structure and user-friendly layout.

  • Ensure compatibility across desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

  • Implement search engine optimization (SEO) best practices.

  • Ensure compliance with accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG).


Calendar & Events Management



  • Using existing Wordpress modules:

    • Develop an interactive events calendar.

    • Allow administrators to easily add, edit, and remove events.

    • Enable filtering by event type, date, and audience.

    • Provide calendar views by day, week, and month.

    • Support integration with external calendars if required.



Online Booking Requests



  • Using existing Wordpress form modules:

    • Facility rental requests

    • Room bookings

    • Program registrations

    • Event inquiries


  • Route requests to designated staff via email notifications.

  • Include confirmation messages and automated acknowledgements.

  • Store submitted requests securely.


Contact & Communication Features



  • Develop a "Contact Us" feature with configurable forms.

  • Support general inquiries and department-specific contacts.

  • Include spam protection and form validation.

  • Enable automated email notifications to designated recipients.


Content Management



  • Provide training and documentation for administrators.


Security & Performance



  • Implement industry-standard security controls.
