Security Folk Training Program

Winnipeg Folk Festival is seeking individuals for the Security Folk Training Program.

The Security Folk Crew is an important part of our volunteer team. They specialize in de-escalation, take care of small problems before they become big ones and foster a great Festival experience for all.

We care how we treat our Festival folks, so we have developed our own Festival Security training program. This program is an opportunity for individuals to increase their skills and gain work experience at the Festival and is provided at no cost to participants.

Upon completion graduates of the program earn:

• Provincial security guard license


• First Aid


• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention


• Other recognized credentials that can be used outside of the Festival weekend.

We also spend time applying these newly acquired skills within the Festival's welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment.

Who Should Apply?

This is an excellent opportunity for people interested in learning new skills and contributing to the Festival in a new and interesting way. The training offered can also provide other opportunities to work as a security guard at different events and establishments in Manitoba.

Applicants who are already licensed security guards will only be required to complete topics not included in the Manitoba Security Guard Training Program.

This program includes both in-person and online training. Only those interested in investing the time and who have the means to complete online training should apply. In-person training will take place in the evening or on weekends and be offered for a variety of dates to ensure accessibility.

Qualifications and Assets:

• Capable of sitting/walking/standing for up to 8 hours daily


• Able to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in English


• A Satisfactory Criminal Records Check and Child Abuse Registry Check (costs covered by Winnipeg Folk Festival) is required for the Manitoba Security Guard Licence and reviewed by Manitoba Justice


• Be 18 years of age and have an address in the province of Manitoba, required for the Manitoba Security Guard Licence


• A valid Driver's Licence is considered an asset


• Willing to commit to completing the training outlined below

The Winnipeg Folk Festival is committed to providing quality training and investing in creating a security team responsive to the community. As such we request that those who participate in this training opportunity commit to volunteering on the Security Folk team for no less than three years.

All training costs will be covered by the Winnipeg Folk Festival inlcuding the Manitoba Security Guard License.

The training offered can also provide other opportunities to work as a security guard at different events and establishments in Manitoba.

Applicants who are already licensed security guards will only be required to complete topics not included in the Manitoba Security Guard Training Program.

Winnipeg Folk Festival is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive environment.

Online training requirements:

• Manitoba Security Guard Training Program - approximately 40 hours online/self-paced. We offer support with questions as needed. Final exam is online.


• Smart Choices - approximately 2 hours online.


• Folk Ed - this is the Winnipeg Folk Festival's online training platform; a variety of individual courses (self-paced).

In-person training requirements:

• Standard First Aid CPR and AED - two days


• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention - two days


• Mental Health Incident Response - half-day


• Festival Security Program - half-day


• Harm Reduction and Naloxone Administration - half-day


• Intersectionality - half day


• Sexualized Violence Response Training - half-day


• DART (disability awareness) - half-day

In-person training takes place in Winnipeg, generally at the Winnipeg Folk Festival office at 211 Bannatyne Ave.
