| Description of Duties: | Shelter support volunteers provide informal groups and activities in our busy violence prevention shelter program, working alongside our shelter program staff. Support volunteers may also help with daily tasks like tidying, child-minding, donation sorting and laundry. |
| Skills Required: | Shelter support volunteers require good communication skills, patience and excellent judgement, as well as cultural tolerance and competency to work among diverse staff and shelter program participants. Volunteers must understand and abide by Willow Place privacy and confidentiality policies, and must provide current, favourable backchecks (adult and child abuse registries, criminal background check with vulnerable sector search). An easy-going and friendly demeanor is essential, with flexibility to shift priorities and follow staff direction in a fast-paced environment. |
| Skills Gained/Related Careers: | The shelter support volunteer role offers many opportunities for building skills, including providing practical support for diverse populations (women and children) in a crisis support, congregate living setting. The role also provides opportunities to build stronger interpersonal communication skills, and learn about person-centered, trauma-informed supportive programming in a residential setting. |
