Organizational Description: The Living Prairie Museum is a 12 hectare (30acre) tall grass prairie preserve located inside the City of Winnipeg. Set aside in 1968, this preserve is home to over 160 species of prairie plants and a great array of prairie wildlife and is one of the few remaining fragments of this once vast ecosystem.

The goal of Living Prairie Museum is to provide awareness and conservation of natural areas, specifically tall grass prairie, through environmental education.

We host many special events, workshops, day camps and free family activties throughout the year.

Description of Duties:

This volunteer position will help with delivery of the Living Prairie Museum Monarch Butterfly Festival and 50th Anniversary on August 8 and/or 9. This festival is visited by people of all ages, and will likely have over 2000 visitors across the two days. Volunteers will assist staff with delivering festival activities, such as crafts, temporary tattoos, or assisting at booths.


Volunteer location will be Living Prairie Museum (2795 Ness Ave.)


There are several volunteer roles available:


Craft/Activities Helper - assist in distributing craft/activitiy materials, mainly to children, demonstrate how to complete craft or activity, monitor and resupply activity materials


Milkweed Giveaway Station - distribute milkweed to visitors, assist with "Map your Milkweed" activity


Photography - circulate at the event and take pictures of various activities


Partner Table Support - various activities to support partner activities, such as help with set-up of booths/tables, monitoring for supplies or assistance needed


Sensory Tent Support - maintain calm and low-stimulation environment for people to experience various sensory experiences, and to be away from busy crowds


Snacks and drinks will be provided for volunteers


Living Prairie Museum will provide recognition of individual hours volunteered if requested


Travel and Accessibility:
-Access is by car, on the #220 and D15 bus routes, or from the Yellow Ribbon Trail.
- Site is wheelchair/walker-accessible from parking lot or via path from sidewalk on Ness Ave.
-Washroom door width is 81cm, with internal stall 1.36M x 1.86m.
-Some activities will be located on grass, others will be indoors or on paved parking lot.

   
Skills Required:

Volunteers must be 18 years old or accompanied by a parent/guardian


Volunteers must be able to work in a busy environment with lots of people around


Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to do their tasks rain or shine. Closed-toe shoes are recommended.


-Craft/Activity Station Helper: No special skills required, must be able to talk clearly with public and willing to be around children


-Milkweed Giveaway Station: Must be knowledgeable of native milkweed planting and care


-Photography: Experience with DLSR camera required, being able to bring own camera an asset


-Partner Table Support: must be able to be flexible with various potential tasks


-Sensory Tent Support: must be capable of providing supportive environment that respects neurodivergence. If interested in working at this tent, we will schedule a conversation with you (phone/video/etc depending on your preference) to discuss more details.
