Description of Duties:

MDSS Active Youth Program is designed to help youth with Down syndrome aged 9 to 17 build physical literacy skills, develop confidence in sport and recreation, and make meaningful connections with peers.


As a volunteer in the Active Youth Program, you will support children and youth with Down syndrome in participating in inclusive, fun, and engaging recreational activities. Volunteers help foster a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment that promotes physical activity, social development, and confidence-building.


Key Responsibilities:



  • Assist program participants during physical activities, games, and group events

  • Help with set-up and clean-up of program materials and spaces

  • Promote positive peer interactions and inclusive participation

  • Support individual needs while respecting independence and ability levels

  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants

  • Work collaboratively with MDSS staff and other volunteers

  • Report any concerns or incidents to the Program Coordinator promptly

   
Skills Required:

  • Enthusiastic, compassionate, and reliable


  • Comfortable engaging with children and youth of all abilities


  • Able to follow directions and adapt to changing needs


  • Prior experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities is an asset, but not required


  • Must complete MDSS volunteer orientation and a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (if over 18)
