Description of Duties:

Position Summary


The Treasurer serves as the board's lead financial steward, ensuring the organization remains financially healthy, transparent, and compliant. Because the nonprofit contracts a separate bookkeeper, the Treasurer's role centers on oversight, review, strategic guidance, and financial reporting, not daily data entry or transaction processing.


Key Responsibilities



  • Financial Oversight - Provide highlevel review of the organization's financial position, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with boardapproved budgets.

  • Budget Leadership - Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive; present the proposed budget to the board for approval.

  • Board Reporting - Present clear, comprehensible financial reports at board meetings, highlighting trends, risks, and variances.

  • Bookkeeper Oversight - Review monthly financial statements prepared by the bookkeeper; ensure proper categorization, reconciliations, and adherence to accounting policies.

  • Internal Controls - Ensure appropriate financial controls are in place, including segregation of duties, approval processes, and safeguarding of assets.

  • Compliance Monitoring - Oversee compliance with federal and provincial reporting requirements, including annual filings, and nonprofit returns.

  • External Financial Reviewer Coordination - Serve as the primary board contact for external financial reviewers; ensure timely completion of required reviews.

  • Policy Development - Lead creation or updates of financial policies (e.g., expense reimbursement, reserve policy, investment policy).

  • Strategic Financial Guidance - Advise the board on longterm financial planning, sustainability, and risk management.

  • Banking & Signing Authority - Maintain oversight of banking relationships; serve as an authorized signing officer as defined by board policy.


Qualifications



  • Financial literacy and comfort reading financial statements

  • Experience in budgeting, financial oversight, or accounting

  • Understanding of nonprofit governance and fiduciary duties

  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to a diverse board

  • Integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to the mission


Time Commitment



  • Attend regular board meetings (every second month)

  • Review monthly financial statements

  • Lead annual budget cycle and yearend review

  • Estimated 3-6 hours per month.
