Organizational Description: The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) was established in 1997 as a non-profit organization with a vision to provide a structured basketball league for Winnipeg area youth, open for all to participate. The league tipped off with 40 teams, based out of 12 Community Centers. The WMBA now supports over 200 teams and offers 6 leagues and programs, spanning all age groups.

Description of Duties:

The Treasurer at the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Director.s. Responsibilities include:



  • Meeting regularly with the Executive Director and the external bookkeeper for the WMBA to review monthly financial statements including submission and discussion of the statements at monthly meetings of the Board of Directors.

  • Second signature on expenditures including EFT's, and cheques.

  • Monitor purchasing card transactions and usage of reward points.

  • Assist in the submission of annual review engagement financial statements to the WMBA's external accountants. Review final financial statements and non-profit tax returns.

  • Discuss and revise the WMBA Investment policy.

  • Understand and monitor transactions with the WMBA foundation regarding investments in court maintenance and scholarships.

  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and setting registration fee rates on an annual basis.

  • Monitor and explain variances and ensure maintenance of internal controls.

   
Skills Required:

Preferred skills include ability to interpret and analyze financial transactions


CPA designation or equivalent MBA training in finance is required.

   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Ability to communicate and understand financial concepts in a non-profit or charitable organization setting.

The WMBA has engaged an external contractor who provides regular bookkeeping services. This position is more advisory in nature but does require sufficient knowledge to question material variances and analyze expenditures requiring further explanation. In additon understanding of revenue streams and ensuring there are reconciliations of expected to actual revenue and regular bank reconciliations is an important consideration in maintaining a strong internal control environment.
