Description of Duties:

This volunteer will help us maintain the safety of the building on weekday evenings or weekend afternoons during our Spring 2026 session (10 weeks, April 18 - June 21), with possibility to extend over the summer and/or into fall. Forum Art Centre has classes programmed all times of the day, 7 days a week. We are working to ensure there is a staff person or trained volunteer (in addition to the art instructors) at the centre during all class times. Forum Art Centre is a community arts centre, non-profit organization, and registered charity with a mission to make art education accessible for all... and we need the assistance of volunteers to fill the gaps that can't be covered by our very small staff!

The duties of this position will vary based on the needs of the classes and the centre, but will include the following:

  • Supervise the main door during class times - welcome students in, ensure the door is locked after all students have arrived, and monitor for students that may be late who will either knock, or phone reception to be let in.

  • Ensure that the back door is always closed - students will sometimes prop this door open to load supplies into the building, and it cannot be left open.

  • Help us maintain the centre during classes, as time allows (Forum Art Centre does not have a cleaning service, all cleaning is done by staff and volunteers) - cleaning bathrooms, emptying garbage and recycling bins, re-stocking toilet paper/paper towels/hygiene products, cleaning the clean-up room, sweeping floors, mopping, tidying the kitchen/front desk area/art supplies area, vacuuming.

  • Other odd tasks as needed, such as - cleaning paint brushes, testing markers, sharpening pencils and pencil crayons, organizing youth art supplies area fabric bins, stacks of paper, paint trays, tubes and bottles of paint etc.

  • May occasionally be asked to help with administrative tasks - especially when there is an upcoming event, or registration period.

Skills Required:

  • Must be responsible and vigilant - able to monitor access to the centre during class periods outside of regular office hours.

  • Ability to multitask - keeping an eye/ear on the door/phone while doing other tasks such as cleaning, organizing etc.
