Description of Duties:

MIIC Welcome Place is searching for individuals who are interested in participating on its volunteer governance board of directors. The Welcome Place board is an active volunteer governing board with 10 to 12 members whose collective skills support the achievement of the organization's goals.


MIIC Welcome Place knows the importance of building a strong team, including its board of directors, where diverse abilities, backgrounds, cultures, faith groups, identities, languages, and perspectives drive a high standard of service.


Board Member Responsibilities:


Board Leadership, Governance and Oversight of MIIC Welcome Place



  • Work with the leadership team to set the vision, mission, and strategic plan.

  • Represent MIIC Welcome Place externally to the communities we work with, to all levels of government, to funders and potential funders, and with boards of other organizations in our sector.

  • Be publicly accountable for the performance of the organization.

  • Through direct oversight of the Executive Director, hold the organization accountable for: compliance to funding agreements; legal and fiduciary requirements; risk management; and progress toward strategic goals.

  • Work with the leadership team, build relationships with elected officials and government administrators to advance relevant public policies and seek public sector support on behalf of MIIC Welcome Place clients, the organization, and Manitoba's settlement sector.

  • Build relationships with Manitoba's business community members in support of sponsorships, partnerships, and other innovative opportunities. Engage in trustworthy communication with the media.

  • Guide and support MIIC Welcome Place to achieve its mandate, removing barriers as necessary.

  • Lead by example in upholding the culture of MIIC Welcome Place.

  • Plan for board succession and recruit members whose skillsets are required and valued in leading Welcome Place forward.


Board and Committee Meetings



  • Regularly attend board and committee meetings and functions, such as special events.

  • Review agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings.

  • Stay informed about committee matters, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports.

  • Volunteer for and/or be willing to accept assignments from the board, and to complete assignments in a timely manner.

  • Get to know other committee members and build a collegial working relationship that contributes to achieving goals.

  • Actively participate in the work of the board.


Fundraising



  • Participate in fundraising activities for MIIC Welcome Place as requested.

  • Indicate commitment and support of MIIC Welcome Place by way of an annual contribution thereby allowing the organization to credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals.

Meetings are every second month, 8:00 AM, alternating between virtual and in-person. Meeting length is approximately 1.5 hours.
