Description of Duties:

Paddling Instructors represent FortWhyte Alive (FWA) with schools coming for school paddling courses (Grade 6-12) during May and June. Instructors (volunteers) work alongside staff paddle instructors to equip participants with appropriate PFDs, paddles, and boats, return the same to orderly fashion after use. They assist in providing instruction and support in basic canoeing and kayaking. Training is provided using FWA School Paddling Program manual and on-the-job training, including safety, technique, and supervise paddling participants on the water.


Instructors will receive ongoing training in use and maintenance of all equipment, as well as the equivalent of 2 hrs role specific training on paddling procedures (May 1, 1:00pm - 3:00pm)


If weather is clearly dangerous and a program will not take place, you will be advised with as much notice as possible. Otherwise, please report as scheduled, and compensation will be made for a call-in shift.


   
Skills Required:

  • Knowledge and comfort with paddling (canoeing/kayaking).

  • Ability to work with students and visitors to FortWhyte Alive.

  • Safety conscious.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and provide direction.
