Description of Duties:

Key Responsibilities



  • Monitor the organization's financial health and ensure transparency and accountability.

  • Review monthly financial statements, budgets, and reports prepared by staff or external accountants.

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the executive director or finance committee.

  • Provide financial insight for strategic planning and project proposals.

  • Ensure timely submission of financial reports to the Board, funders, and Canadian Revenue Agency.

  • Oversee compliance with Canadian charity laws and donor restrictions.

  • Support annual audits or reviews; help ensure effective internal financial controls.

  • Act as liaison between the board and the auditor or bookkeeper.

  • Help evaluate financial feasibility of fundraising plans and project budgets.

  • Assist in financial tracking and reporting of grants or restricted funds.

  • Co-chair the Finance Committee and guide board discussions on key financial decisions.

   
Skills Required:

Education and Experience:




  • Post-secondary education (college diploma or university degree) in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.



  • 2-5 years of financial management, accounting, or bookkeeping experience, preferably within the nonprofit or charitable sector.



  • Experience in budget preparation, financial reporting, and understanding regulatory compliance requirements for charities.



  • Proficiency with accounting software (such as QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel.



  • Experience working with diverse teams and maintaining confidentiality.

  • Analytical thinking and ability to interpret data and advise on financial decisions

Flexible Hours



  • Approximately 4-6 hours per month, including preparation for and participation in board meetings.



  • Additional time during annual budgeting periods and financial reporting deadlines.



  • Participation in quarterly board meetings (virtual or in-person) and the Annual General Meeting.



  • Occasional participation in committee meetings and special projects as required.
