Organizational Description: | The Leftovers Foundation is one of Canada's largest, tech-enabled food rescue organizations. We envision a world where communities come together and are engaged in reducing food waste. We reshape how our communities fight poverty, reduce food waste, and save our environment. Along with our volunteers, donors, and service agencies, we seek to fulfill our mission to reduce food waste and increase access in communities across Western Canada. The Leftovers Foundation recognizes that issues within our food systems are deeply rooted in racial, economic and social inequities. As an organization that strives to tackle these issues, we are committed to incorporating Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) in all the work we do, and that includes how and who we recruit to be on our team of volunteers and staff, along with providing them with ongoing IDEA training. |

Volunteer Opportunity ID: | 5384 |
Description of Duties: | Use the Leftovers Rescue Food app and volunteer to pickup and deliver some garden produce in your neighborhood! Leftovers Foundation's seasonal program, Home Harvest, facilitates the rescue of home-grown produce from local backyard gardens. City residents sign up as a "grower" with Leftovers when they have excess produce to be shared. Growers fill out a form to request a pick-up and our team will post the details on the Rescue Food app. Volunteers are tasked with picking up and delivering the produce to a local service agency or upcycler. Some Growers may request the produce to be harvested if they are unable to do it themselves. Home Harvest routes that require harvesting typically have a longer duration than Rescue Food routes from a food vendor or Home Harvest routes that are pick-up only. Please allow enough time in your schedule to collect as much of the produce as possible. As a token of appreciation, volunteers are welcome to keep a portion of the harvest! You'll use the app to find harvests near you and sign up. You can sign up and complete routes as an individual or as a group and bring friends or family. When you sign up for a route, all the necessary details will be in the route description. You will be responsible for contacting the Grower to arrange all the details including a time frame of when you will be able to complete the route. Once completed, you'll drop off the harvest with the service agency or upcycler displayed in the app. Press Complete Harvest in the app and answer the survey questions, including weight of donation. |
Skills Required: | Harvesting Produce: Volunteers must be mobile and may be required to do light physical work and harvest fruit and vegetables from a tree or from the ground. You will be walking, reaching, picking, and bending. Coordination & Communication: Volunteers must contact the grower 48 hours prior to the harvest to confirm details and discuss any equipment or needs. If you have a hard time getting a hold of them, you must contact our Leftovers team. In app messaging is available for this. Transporting Produce: Volunteers are responsible for transporting the harvested produce to local service agencies or upcyclers, ensuring that it is delivered safely and within the designated time. One person must have a valid drivers license to transport themselves and/or your team as well as transport the harvested produce. Comfortable working outdoors: Please use your best judgment on weather. If it is not a good day to complete the route, contact the Grower to arrange for another day. Safety & Quality Assurance: Volunteers must ensure that the harvest is safe to handle and distribute, avoiding produce with pest damage or contamination. If produce is not ripe or safe, volunteers should postpone or leave it behind. Equipment Management: Volunteers should bring necessary equipment such as boxes, bags, or containers. A ladder or fruit picker may be needed for larger harvests. Must be able to lift heavy items such as bags or boxes of produce. Post-Harvest Reporting: After completing the harvest, volunteers are required to report the weight of the donation through the app and complete a brief survey. Volunteers are encouraged to take and share photos of their efforts. |
