Organizational Description: Prairie Strides has been in operation since 1977, running an adaptive horseback riding program for kids aged 5 to 15 with disabilities. As a volunteer-powered organization, we need your generosity and energy to keep the program going. Each child has 3 Volunteers with them to ensure they receive the proper support they need to enjoy the Equestrian sport.
Without the generosity of time from our volunteers, we may not be able to operate, and these children will never experience riding a horse.

Description of Duties:

Program therapists work in conjunction with certified instructors to aid in the delivery of the accessible horseback riding program. The therapist help with assessments of riders and problem solving.


Therapists will be responsible to greet the children, assist in determining what stretches riders should perform prior to mounting, assist mounting rider's, and determine which hold a sidewalker should use for each rider.


At times they will also be required to assist with training of volunteers outside of regular program evenings.

Registered Occupational Therapists, Physio Therapists, Speech and Language Pathologist, Psychologists

Experience working in a fun loving and giving environment. Have fun with a group of great volunteers, be witness to the smiles and benefits of riding a horse for the children.

Time Commitment:
Evening

Program runs for twelve weeks in the Spring and Fall. Therapists are asked to attend assessments nights at the beginning of each session. They are encouraged to attend program each week to assist rider's in doing stretches and preparing them for their riding journey. Our programs run in the Spring and Fall at West Wind Stables just south of Winnipeg, near Oak Bluff.


Our Spring 2026 Session Dates are as follows:


Volunteer Orientation: Monday, March 23, 2026 (Zoom)


Leader/Sidewalker Training: Wednesday, March 25, 2026


Dry Run night: Monday, April 6, 2026 and Wednesday, April 8, 2026


Monday night classes will run from April 13 through June 22, 2026


Wednesday night classes will run from April 15 through June 24, 2026


There will be no class on Monday, May 18 and Wednesday, May 20, 2026
