Description of Duties: | What is the iCan Shine Bike Camp? iCan Shine Bike Camp teaches individuals living with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheel bicycle using adapted bike equipment. We understand that the vast majority of people with disabilities never have the experience of independently riding a conventional two-wheel bicycle during their lifetime. Research shows that over 80% of people with Autism and 90% of people with Down syndrome never experience this thrill. Defying these odds is why we exist! When - 2 x one week long events: July 3rd-7th AND July 10-14th, 2023. The demand for this year's Variety and iCan Shine bike camp has increased, and so has the need for volunteers. 80 riders are enrolled with each rider requiring 2 volunteers! ***NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE WORKING WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IS NECESSARY*** Please plan to attend our 1-hour orientation on July 2 or July 9th depending on which week you volunteer at 4:00PM at Transcona East End Arena. During this orientation, you will learn about how the iCan Bike program operates, what to expect each day in your role as a volunteer spotter and you will receive training tips on spotting your assigned rider. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and meet other volunteers in your session. Volunteer role: Spotter: Walk/jog/run alongside a rider as they are learning to ride a bike during a 75-minute session (with short breaks). Ideally, you are asked to attend the same session for all 5 days, so you can work with the same rider each day. You will provide encouragement and physical support, as needed. We encourage volunteers to commit to attending all 5 days of camp for the session(s) selected. Riders bond with their assigned volunteer(s) and rely on the same person to be there to support them each day of camp. We do understand this is not always a possibility and will welcome volunteers any days they can attend. |
Skills Required: | AGE REQUIREMENT: Volunteers must be at least 15 years old. If you are under 15, please contact the Camp Host for possible opportunities. Volunteer spotters will walk/jog approximately 3 miles during each 75-minute session Volunteers ideally, are asked to attend the same session for all 5 days, so you can work with the same rider each day. |
