Description of Duties:

Community Financial, in partnership with Canada Revenue Agency, operates free Community Volunteer Income Tax Program tax clinics for individuals with modest incomes.

Volunteers in this role will help support those filing taxes by printing and preparing completed documents for mailing to the clients we serve. Operating from our temporary tax clinic in the Norquay Builing (401 York Ave, Winnipeg) you'll be part of an energetic and collegial atmosphere. If you enjoy organizing, working with your hands, have some familiarity with technology, and are very detail oriented, this may be a good fit for you!

Skills Required:

- This program works with people from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, including recent immigrants and refugees. High levels of respect and empathy are required.
- Strong English language skills are required.
- Clear penmanship for addressing envelopes and letters is required.
- Familiarity and comfort with technology is required (you will be trained on the various tools used)
- Experience preparing tax returns is an asset, but is not mandatory.
- This role may involve lots of time on your feet and work with your hands.

Other Requirements:
- must be 18 or older
- must provide a clear Criminal Record Check and have lived in Canada for 1 year
- must be able to commit to minimum shift requirements
- mail preparer stations are located on a short raised platform, up two steps. Accommodation for an alternate location without steps may be possible if needed.

Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Volunteers will gain insight into the complex situations that our CVITP clients may face, and will work as part of a team, collaborating to successfully complete the tax filing process from start to finish. Volunteers will also gain experience with our organization and the CVITP and therefore this could be a good first step to someone interested in volunteering as a tax preparer in the future.

Many of our volunteers are entering into or have retired from careers such as Accounting, Financial Advising, and CRA. However, we also have retired dance teachers, police officers, and people who simply want to give back to their community. All are welcome.

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment:
Daytime

Tax Clinics will operate from the last week of February through the end of April 2027. Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one 6 hour shift for each of the weeks in this period. Many volunteers wish to work more than one shift, and we are happy to accommodate them where possible.
