Description of Duties:

Volunteer Ambassadors enrich the visitor experience by providing a welcoming environment. Volunteers are deployed in many locations in the Zoo, Park and The Leaf, Children/Adult programs and workshops and Special Events. Ambassadors are friendly resources; providing basic information and interesting news of the day to visitors, giving directions, and sharing details on upcoming events and attractions.

Engagement Ambassadors use interpretive techniques and tools, to interact with adults and children throughout the Zoo and The Leaf, sharing information about our animals and plants through conversation and storytelling, Engagement Ambassadors enhance the visitor experience by:
- promoting an appreciation of our animals and plants and their environments
- inspiring a connection to the environment and conservation
Additional training is provided.

Facilities, Grounds and Horticulture Volunteers provide support to staff by litter picking, fence painting, weed pulling and other duties that help keep our park and zoo beautiful. Support Volunteers must train as Ambassadors prior to acceptance into other roles.

   
Skills Required:

Volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to qualify for this position.
Fluency in spoken and written English is essential. Ability to speak a second language is an asset.
Friendly and outgoing with the ability to start conversations.
Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain a positive working relationship with diverse groups.
Sound judgment and tact in solving problems and dealing with the general public.
The ability to stand or walk for extended periods of time outdoors or indoors (accommodations can be made upon request) or use mobility aids.
Criminal record and child abuse registry checks for volunteers 18 years of age or older.
The primary method of communication with volunteers is email. Access to email is essential.

The Ambassador and Engagement Ambassador programs are year-round with a 3 hour shift per week commitment required during spring and summer months. A commitment of a minimum of 60 hours of volunteer service per year is required.
