Organizational Description: | Frontier College is a national literacy organization operating a wide variety of programs in locations across Canada. We recruit and train volunteer tutors who assist children, youth, and adults to acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills. We also partner with community-based organizations to help them establish and deliver literacy programs that meet the specific needs of their communities and participants. As Canada's original literacy organization, Frontier College has been recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with Canadian children, youth, and adults from coast to coast to coast since 1899. Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | We are seeking new applicants to join our Fall programming beginning in September 2018. We will contact you then for an interview and invite you to our training in the fall. We are seeking volunteers to support in literacy programs in the Downtown and Centennial area. Volunteers will support learners working in small groups as well as provide some one-to-one tutoring, with a focus on reading, writing, and numeracy skills. Skills Required: | We are seeking individuals who: - Want to help others improve their literacy - Are committed to and reliable for at least 2 hours of volunteering per week - Are comfortable working with learners from a variety of backgrounds - Are enthusiastic, patient, flexible, creative, and understanding - Want to make a difference in their community and in the lives of others **Please note that unfortunately we cannot accept volunteers under the age of 16.** |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | As a Frontier College volunteer, you will gain: - Literacy tutoring skills - Experience working with learners from a variety of backgrounds, including individuals with learning disabilities - Experience assisting children and adults with formative language abilities - great for parents and anybody working with young children! |
