Organizational Description: The Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA) was established in 1997 as a non-profit organization with a vision to provide a structured basketball league for Winnipeg area youth, open for all to participate. The league tipped off with 40 teams, based out of 12 Community Centers. The WMBA now supports over 200 teams and offers 6 leagues and programs, spanning all age groups.

Description of Duties:

The Treasurer is an important volunteer position on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Winnipeg Minor Basketball Association (WMBA).


As the Board member responsible for oversight of all things financial including working with our external financial accountant and Executive Director in the preparation of monthly financial statements for the Board, coordinating the annual review engagement report with our external accountants, and preparation of budgets for Board approval. you will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the WMBA.


Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:


Strategic Planning: Contribute to the development and implementation of the organization's strategic plan.


Governance: Participate in Board and Executive Committee meetings, provide input on policies, and ensure compliance with relevant requirements.


Provide input into Media promotions, Communications, Fundraising and Sponsorship: Assist in securing financial support to sustain and enhance WMBA programs. Review with Board and Executive Board members and the Executive Director investment strategies and financial issues to provide guidance regarding internal controls and opportunities to work with community centre members in a coordinated manner..


Community Engagement: Foster positive relationships with stakeholders, including parents, coaches, players, and local partners.


Advocacy: Advocate for the growth and development of basketball at the youth level within the community.

   
Skills Required:

An accounting designation would be an important requirement for the position.

The Treasurer will be able to develop many contacts with other professionals and contribute as a volunteer to activities that benefit our youth in the community. From a career development perspective, involvement with a volunteer Board promotes understanding of Board governance, communications, and group consensus decision making.

Board meetings are held in the evening on the last Wednesday of the month. The volunteer board position would involve discussions and potential additional meetings with our Executive Director, Executive Committee and President
