Description of Duties:

Responsibilities:




  • Plan the club activities for the season (weekly lesson plans and yearly goals).





  • Regularly communicate with assistant coaches, sport program volunteers, parents, & athletes.





  • Facilitate practices with assistant coaches with the safety and well-being of the athletes always coming first.





  • Ensure that all athletes/volunteers are registered to participate.





  • Attending regularly scheduled regional and provincial coaches' meetings.





  • Devote adequate time to the preparation of athletes for competitions and other events.





  • Attend competitions with athletes regularly.



  • Submit Club Property Inventory and Out-of-Province Travel Requests by March 1st to Director of Program Development.



  • Complete and update coach and athlete program enrollments in SOM Portal regularly throughout the season.





  • Participate in Regional/Provincial events, including regional meetings and fundraising initiatives.





  • Ensure an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) is in place.





  • Communicate regularly with SOM staff and regional leadership team.


   
Skills Required:

Requirements:




  • Curling experience & knowledge



  • Adherence to Special Olympics Manitoba Coaches Code of Conduct





  • Adherence to Special Olympics Manitoba Constitution & By-Laws, Principles





  • Must follow the philosophy of Special Olympics Manitoba as presented in the mission statement





  • Must be at least 18 years of age





  • Not responsible for transportation to and from practices or competitions





  • Instruction in sport skills





  • Competition at an appropriate level





  • Modeling and instilling socially appropriated behavior including fair play





  • Teach the role of head coach via mentorship to program volunteers and assistant coaches


   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Training and Supervision:






  • Commitment to complete subsidized NCCP courses (SOC Competition Coach Workshop, Sport Specific, Intro A) within the first two (2) years of coaching





  • Complete and pass the Making Ethical Decisions (MED) Evaluation





  • Must have reasonable knowledge of chosen sport and sport-related training





  • Annual Coaches Meeting to review policies and procedures





  • Support, inform, and encourage assistant coaches and coaching/program volunteers to be certified





  • Participate in initial feedback questionnaire





  • Participate with SOM staff in program visit

The time commitment is one to two weekly sessions for 1 to 2 ½ hours. Some weekends are required for competition.
