Description of Duties:

Active Start


A physical literacy program, Active Start for children ages
2 to 6.


It includes basic movement concepts, static balance, running, stopping/starting, jumping, throwing/rolling a ball, catching/trapping a ball, kicking a ball, and striking a ball.


FUNdamentals


Building on skills that were introduced through the Active Start program, the FUNdamentals program is for children aged 7 to 12 years.


This program is for athletes who are looking to develop more sport-specific skills and includes the following sports:



  • Athletics (running, jumping, throwing),

  • Soccer (kicking, running),

  • Basketball (catching),

  • Softball (striking)

  • and more!


Responsibilities:




  • Attend practice and competition events on a regular basis





  • Communicate with head coach regarding practices and competitions





  • Adhere to the plans for the head coach (weekly & yearly)





  • Supervise activities when deemed necessary by head coach





  • Attend coaching conferences and clinics as necessary to upgrade coaching skills





  • Instruction in basic motor and sport skills



  • Modeling and instilling socially appropriated behavior including fair play



  • Learning the role of Head Coach via mentorship


   
Skills Required:

Requirements:




  • Experience with individual with intellectual disabilities is an asset





  • Adherence to Special Olympics Manitoba Coaches Code of Conduct , Constitution & By-Laws, Principles





  • Must follow the philosophy of Special Olympics Manitoba as presented in the Mission Statement





  • Must be at least 14 years


   
Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Training and Supervision:




  • Complete Special Olympics Canada Online Volunteer Orientation and pass the quiz with 70%





  • Complete Respect in Sport renew every 5 years





  • Participate in initial feedback questionnaire





  • Participate with SOM staff in program visit





  • Participate in an exit interview upon completion of volunteer position





  • Will report to the Head Coach

The time commitment is one to two weekly sessions for 1 to 2 ½ hours.
