Organizational Description: | Frontier College is a national literacy organization operating a wide variety of programs in locations across Canada. We recruit and train volunteer tutors who assist children, youth, and adults to acquire essential literacy and numeracy skills. We also partner with community-based organizations to help them establish and deliver literacy programs that meet the specific needs of their communities and participants. As Canada's original literacy organization, Frontier College has been recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with Canadian children, youth, and adults from coast to coast to coast since 1899. Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | Frontier College operates a numbers of literacy support programs across Winnipeg, all with the focus of helping children,youth, adults, and families who want to improve their literacy skills. We work with many community-based organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-focused programs. We are currently recruiting Volunteer Tutors to support various programs across Winnipeg. Programs include working with adults at a high school level, individuals learning English as an additional language, reading supports to children from kindergarten to middle years, after school reading circles with grades 1-5, homework clubs with individuals ages 6-17, and more! We are confident we can find you a tutoring placement that fits your interests and availability. We will provide free training to anyone accepted as a Frontier College volunteer. Skills Required: | We are seeking individuals who: - Want to help others improve their literacy - Are committed to and reliable for at least 2 hours of volunteering per week - Are comfortable working with learners from a variety of backgrounds and literacy levels - Are enthusiastic, patient, flexible, creative, and understanding - Want to make a difference in their communities and in the lives of others **Please note that unfortunately we cannot accept volunteers under the age of 14.** |
Skills Gained/Related Careers: | As a volunteer with Frontier College, you will gain: - Literacy tutoring skills - Experience in supporting learners from a variety of backgrounds, different literacy levels, including EAL learners and individuals with learning disabilities - Experience assisting children and adults with formative language abilities - great for parents and anybody working with young children! |

Time Commitment: | Daytime, Evening, Weekend Our core programming runs from September through June, and we are currently accepting applicants. Ideally we ask that our volunteers can commit to 1-2 hours per week for a minimum of the school year. We have a variety of opportunities to explore, working with all age groups and backgrounds! |
