To advocate for change and coordinate action to improve the health of Lake Winnipeg.

Founded by concerned citizens in 2005, LWF today is the only membership-based freshwater organization in Manitoba, working collaboratively with non-profit, academic, industry and government sectors, First Nations and the public to restore and protect our great lake.

Combining the expertise of our Science Advisory Council and the commitment of our members, LWF has been nationally recognized for our ability to link science with action. Our flagship initiative, the Lake Winnipeg Health Plan, identifies evidence-based actions to reduce phosphorus loading, the root cause of potentially harmful algal blooms.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Volunteer Opportunity ID: 5178

Description of Duties:

The Lake Winnipeg Community-Based Monitoring Network samples for phosphorus, the nutrient responsible for the algae blooms on Lake Winnipeg. We work with local organizations and citizens dispersed across southern Manitoba to identify localized areas that contribute higher amounts of phosphorus to local waterways than other areas, aka "phosphorus hotspots".

Volunteers sample frequently throughout the spring melt and after large rain events to ensure phosphorus runoff is captured. During the spring melt period (which can be anywhere from 2 weeks to one month depending on the speed of thawing and the amount of snow) the time commitment for volunteers is to sample 2-3 times per week and once the spring melt is over and flows stabilize, sampling goes down to once every 2 weeks unless there is a large rain event in which case we will notify you to sample. We are looking for multiple volunteers to sample at various sites throughout rural Manitoba, ideally volunteers would be living close to their chosen sampling location.

Right now we are in the process of preparing equipment. Once a volunteer's equipment is ready we will plan a time to meet at the site to provide equipment and in-the field training.
