Organizational Description: Actionmarguerite, located at 185 Despins Street in St. Boniface, is a bilingual long-term care facility providing a range of services to seniors and adults with physical disabilities and loss of autonomy.

In 1935, the Grey Nuns established Centre hospitalier Taché Nursing Centre, until recently referred to as Taché Centre. Our mandate is to serve Winnipeg's Francophone population and deliver regional specialized services in three specific areas: dementia care with related behaviours, complex and chronic care, and care for those who suffer from an acquired brain injury. We also provide respite care and an Adult Day Centre for seniors and adults living in the community who can benefit from social interaction in a group setting.

Description of Duties:

Actionmarguerite is looking for people like you to connect with residents in our homes. Volunteers are a vital link to help co-create living environments where life is good!

A Recreation Assistant volunteer helps staff with fun programs. This includes helping staff provide activities and connecting with clients to reduce loneliness.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help staff with program set-up and clean-up.

  • Accompany, porter and assist residents to and from program areas.

  • Upon direction from staff, assist with handing out refreshments and snacks.

  • Help a client take part in activities and programs (e.g., demonstrating the activity, providing hand-over-hand assistance).

  • Socialize with and comfort clients, share conversation and interests.

Skills Required:

  • Minimum 12 years old and/or going into grade 8; shows good level of maturity

  • Be patient, flexible and punctual.

  • Be an active listener who can listen without giving advice.

  • Have good people skills to talk with residents, family, staff, and volunteers.

  • Be caring, compassionate and committed.

Skills Gained/Related Careers:

Skills Gained: Communication, Empathy, Compassion, Organizational Skills, Problem Solving and Program Planning.

Related Careers: Recreation Therapist, Healthcare, Social Work and Activities Coordinator.
