Organizational Description: The Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba (LDAM) provides information, referral, and support for individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), their families and the professionals who work with them. LDAM is a United Way supported agency that also receives grants and carries out fundraising activities to help fulfill our mission. LDAM's vision is to help people impacted by learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders to reach their goals and live better lives.

Description of Duties: As an Online Barton Tutor you will work one-on-one with children, youth, and/or adults to improve their reading, writing, and spelling skills due to reading difficulties or reading disabilities. Sessions will be delivered remotely using Zoom and the online platform Whizzimo. The Barton Reading and Writing System is an internationally recognized system (based on the Orton-Gillingham approach). It has been designed to teach the fundamentals of reading and spelling by breaking down words into smaller, more manageable chunks. It teaches the phonemic structure of written language using a multisensory approach, which recognizes that people who struggle with reading and/or spelling learn best by involving all their senses: visual, auditory, tactile and kinesthetic.
   
Skills Required: Post-secondary education with an emphasis on English literature, psychology, or education is an asset. Demonstrated experience and additional skills will also be considered.

Previous tutoring experience is considered an asset.

Child and adult registry check must be completed prior to the start of tutoring.

Access to a laptop and a strong internet connection are required for the online tutor position
