Description of Duties: | Rainbow Resource Centre provides support, education, and resources to foster a proud, resilient, and diverse 2SLGBTQ+ community. Camp Aurora is an overnight summer camp in Manitoba that is subsidized and created for 2SLGBTQ+ youth by Rainbow Resource. This camp serves youth ages 14-19 who identify as Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, asexual, non-binary, genderfluid, queer, and/or questioning. Camp Aurora programming aims to build capacity, resilience, and community of 2SLGBTQ+ youth. Every year, programming includes a variety of sessions that focus on creativity, expression, education, support, hands-on activities, self-care practices, and more. Workshops have included a drag show with local performers, learning about queer history, queer sex education, and beading to name a few. Classic camp activities like swimming, canoe trips, campfires, recreational games, a talent show, and a dance also take place. Camp Aurora is located about 2 hours out of Winnipeg at Variety's Camp Brereton (Whiteshell area. Block 7 Lot 9, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3Y9.) Must be willing to work in any summer weather condition. Sleeping accommodations while at camp are shared cabins with single sized mattress bunk beds. Most cabins have air-conditioning. Although Camp Brereton has paved many of their walkways, the ground may be uneven at Camp. As a volunteer, Your meals and accommodation will be provided free of charge. A $500 honorarium will be provided as an appreciation for your time, energy, and skill set. We can additionally offer $50 for travel expenses if you are using your own vehicle to get to and from Camp. --- Duties & Responsibilities: - Oversee and supervise all canoe activities at camp. - Act as Lead Responder in emergency situations on and around the water. - Maintain behavior standards in and around the water. -Create meaningful connections with youth participants. - Actively engage in camp activities. - Provide training to camp staff and cabin leaders on water safety during activities such as swimming, canoeing alongside the camp lifeguard. - Work with coordinator, staff, facilitators, and volunteers to create a meaningful experience. - Participate in programming debrief. --- |
Skills Required: | - Are 21 years or older. - Standard First Aid/CPR + AED certification. - Are energetic, positive, and friendly with an approachable disposition. - Are self-motivated, adaptable, responsible, enthusiastic, creative. - Can supervise a group of youth in and around the water. - Ability to work within a team to maintain a safe environment and uphold all Rainbow Resource Centre and Camp Brereton's standards and code of conduct. - Have demonstrated experience working with youth in a camp setting. - Identify as a member of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, including two-spirit lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. - Possess a basic understanding of anti-oppression, including an openness to learning about and resisting transphobia, homophobia, racism, xenophobia, ableism, fatphobia, and more. - Can exercise patience and understanding when working with different personalities and working styles. - Have strong verbal communication skills. - Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training is an asset. - Peer Support/Counseling Background is an asset. - Awareness of community resources and appropriate 2SLGBTQ+ friendly referrals is an asset. --- |

Time Commitment: | Daytime, Evening, Weekend The Water Safety Volunteer is expected to be available the early evening on Friday, August 26th to drive out to Camp Brereton, and stay on-site until departure on Wednesday, August 29th. We expect you to be back from Camp Aurora by 6:30 PM on August 30th. There will be opportunities to have breaks while at Camp. Volunteers will also participate in a scheduled interview (online or in-person, on-site training (approx 90 minutes) and a debrief session following camp. |
