Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Why volunteer your valuable time at Rainbow Resource Centre?

To make connections within the 2SLGBTQ+ community and help foster a greater sense of belonging for people that utilize the Centre.

To learn more about the Centre and the resources, support and education we provide to the community.

To gain skills and work experience in group facilitation and activity management for which a professional reference will be provided.

Purpose: New Pride of Winnipeg is a support group for gay, bisexual, trans, two-spirit, queer, and questioning immigrants, refugees and newcomers that meet monthly at the Rainbow Resource Centre.

The Centre is looking for an individual with lived experience as a newcomer, who can work with the current facilitator of New Pride to help organize and lead the group.

Duties & Responsibilities: Organize content and activities to deliver to the group, schedule and promote meetings, manage group communications (email and social media), attend and facilitate meetings, establish and maintain a safe space for all participants including welcoming all first time attendees, manage group expenses and donations, model behaviours to maintain Centre shared spaces, liaise between the group and the Centre including providing monthly reporting, attend centre events as a representative of the group.

Note that New Pride of Winnipeg currently has an active facilitator, and we are looking for a single co-facilitator to work alongside them.
Skills Required: Friendly, people-oriented, responsible, organized, reliable, adaptable.

Has a basic understanding of heterosexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, and other oppressions and how these impact individuals, families, institutions and communities.

Is familiar with resources available to 2SLGBTQ+ newcomers in Winnipeg.

Is familiar with issues faced by 2SLGBTQ+ newcomers in Canada, and in the broader international community.

Can supervise large groups, manage conflict, maintain confidentiality, actively listen, and effectively communicate with people from diverse backgrounds.

Familiarity with Winnipeg's immigration system & experience with immigration representatives are both assets.

Experience facilitating events, planning group activities, and supervising groups of 10-20 people at a time are all assets.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Experience supervising large groups, planning events and facilitating activities, and working among the 2SLGBTQ+ community in Winnipeg.

The opportunity to work closely with newcomers to Winnipeg, and learn about the city's immigration system and available supports.

The Rainbow Resource Centre can also provide a letter of recommendation to volunteers on request.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
4 to 10 hours per month with meetings occurring 1 to 2 times monthly in the evenings and/or on the weekends (depending on your availability, group schedule and space availability).
