Organizational Description: | The MS Society provides services to people with multiple sclerosis and their families and funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease. We have a membership of over 7,000 and are the only national voluntary organization in Canada that supports both MS research and services. Since our founding in 1948, the core support of the MS Society has been from tens of thousands of dedicated individuals, companies and foundations in communities across Canada. The Society receives almost no funding from government. The MS Society is governed by a board of directors comprised of 14 volunteer members who are elected annually. Some 1,500 volunteers serve on MS Society national, division and chapter boards and committees. An estimated 13,500 women and men are volunteers for service programs, fundraising events, public awareness campaigns and social action activities. |

Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | The Route Coordinator plays a key role in ensuring our participants have an enjoyable, accessible, and safe route to experience during the event. As the local route expert, your advance planning and execution of Route Coordinator responsibilities on event day will ensure a fabulous event experience for all Walk participants. Lead route signage - Plan the route, required route signage and set-up locations, rest stop location(s), and route marshal requirements as applicable - Assist in the development of a route map - Work with MS Walk coordinator to get appropriate municipal permits - Determine route safety requirements (i.e. possible road closures, traffic control requirements, Route Marshal placement, route emergency response plan, etc.) based on municipal event requirements, participant numbers, and direction from local law enforcement as needed - Provide Route Marshal and Rest Stop volunteer briefings and support the volunteers on the event day - Ensure the route signage and rest stops are set up on event day and all volunteers are in place at the start of the event - Support any on route issues during the event - Champion the Walk in your community by promoting the event and recruiting participants and day-of-event volunteers |
Skills Required: | - Energizing and Positive Attitude. A friendly face helps create a fun atmosphere! - Strong leadership, communication, organizational and customer service skills - Passion for supporting the MS Community and funding MS research - Basic computer proficiency including email, internet searches, Word, Excel - Self-motivated and reliable; able to fulfill duties on time - Must be comfortable making decisions and problem solving with limited supervision. - Previous experience managing people is considered an asset |

Time Commitment: | - Long term (November- June). Hours will vary based on the size of your community event. Hours will increase as the event approaches. We estimate these roles will take between 1-3 hours per month. - Meet online via Teams once or twice a month - Must be available to attend the event at the end of May for approximately 8 hours. |
