Organizational Description: Let's Talk Science is an award-winning, national, charitable organization focused on education and outreach to support youth development. We create and deliver unique learning programs and services that engage children, youth, and educators in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Our Outreach volunteers engage Canadian youth in a wide variety of meaningful STEM learning experiences in both school and community settings. Our trained and enthusiastic volunteers typically work with children as young as three years old and youth up to Grade 12, delivering hands-on/minds-on activities on a variety of topics.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Our Outreach program volunteers pass on their passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to Canada's future. They shatter negative stereotypes and inspire children and youth to become engaged in STEM learning. Through Let's Talk Science Outreach, we support educators and help youth form positive attitudes towards the role that STEM plays in their lives and futures.

Roles include:
Class Presenter: Lead a fun hands-on activity as a classroom guest for children/youth
Mall Outreach Volunteer: Supervise and show off some of our most popular activities to the public
Science Fair Judge: Grade and provide valuable feedback to elementary, Jr. high and high school students on their science fair projects
Mentor: Help a child work on his/her science fair project
Special Events Helper: Variety of different roles: planning, hosting, presenting, setting up, cleaning
Skills Required: -Must be a student at the University of Manitoba and/or l'Universite de St. Boniface
-Fluent in French and/or English

All Let's Talk Science Outreach volunteers attend an introductory training session that focuses on how to create and deliver impactful, engaging hands-on STEM activities. We cover topics such as theories of learning, how to introduce yourself, and classroom management. Additional optional training and professional development is also offered periodically, both locally and online. As a volunteer with Let's Talk Science, you will gain skills and receive training that can be immediately put into practice and will support your early career.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: -Co-curricular Record (CCR) for University of Manitoba students
-Reference letters provided to volunteers reaching a minimum of 15 volunteer hours

-Develop Leadership Skills: Create your own STEM activities and take charge of special events and programs.
-Be a Role Model: Our volunteers are awe-inspiring. Motivate and inspire youth to enjoy, understand and pursue STEM.
-Develop Teaching Skills: Learn how to make STEM material interesting to young minds by designing engaging hands-on/minds-on activities.
-Develop Communication Skills: Gain experience speaking in front of audiences or writing effective articles, tailoring topics to various age ranges and making research in your own field accessible to children and youth.
-Network and Collaborate: Seize the opportunity to work in a team and meet like-minded people.
-Make a Difference: Be part of a national community that has excited, inspired and engaged over 3 million children, youth, educators, and volunteers since 1993.
-Personal Satisfaction: Share your love of STEM with children and be inspired by their enthusiasm!

Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
Flexible program! Choose when and where you want to volunteer with opportunities released weekly. We have daytime classroom outreaches all throughout the city and rural, volunteer events and community outreach throughout evenings and larger events and symposiums during weekends.
