Organizational Description: The Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba (LDAM) provides information, referral, and support for individuals with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), their families and the professionals who work with them. LDAM is a United Way supported agency that also receives grants and carries out fundraising activities to help fulfill our mission. LDAM's vision is to help people impacted by learning disabilities and attention deficit disorders to reach their goals and live better lives.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: This volunteer opportunity requires a commitment of 2 hours per week over 2 evenings (45 minutes/evening) between Monday and Sunday. An entire session of tutoring is 10 weeks in total.

Tutors will provide a 45-minute long lesson, twice a week using the Barton Reading and Spelling system with a student that is experiencing difficulties with reading and spelling and may have dyslexia. Lessons are scripted and easy to follow. Tutor will provide a progress report at the end of each week. Lessons can be delivered in-person at 617 Erin Street, or online via Zoom.

We provide training in using the Barton Reading and Spelling system which requires a few hours of learning per book/level.
Skills Required: Teaching using the Barton system requires that you can hear the sounds of letters very clearly.

You must be a clear and effective communicator, patient and observant.

It is important that you can identify if a student is struggling with a lesson and take action to ensure they can successfully complete it.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: This opportunity allows you to gain experience and skills working with students that have learning differences using a research-based literacy program.

Time Commitment: Evening
Initial training of between 5-10 hours depending on your learning style. 2 evenings/week for 45 minutes/evening for a minimum of 10-weeks.
