Organizational Description: | The Manitoba Electrical Museum and Education Centre (MEMEC) is a registered Canadian charity. It exists to educate 'in-person' visitors and the general public on: - the history of electrical development and electrification in Manitoba, - electrical safety, - new and emerging electricity-related technologies, energy conservation, and sustainability. MEMEC also delivers programming - including tours and presentations for Grade 6 and Gr 9 students - aligned with Manitoba's science and physics curriculum. Volunteers interested in hosting tours; working in reception, artifact refurbishment, curation, display development, providing IT assistance, working on committees, or designing and hosting traveling exhibits are always welcome. |

Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | General volunteer tour guides perform an essential role of educating the general public. Our educational tour guides provide the curriculum-based physics and science tours for Manitoba grade 6 and Grade 9 students. General Tour Guides: - Our General Museum Tour Guide is a position that provides a welcoming, hospitable environment and rewarding learning experience to museum visitors through on-demand guided tours. Tour guides work from 1 pm to 4 pm the days the museum is open. The Guide is responsible for conducting on-demand walking guided tours for public visitors of all ages and for providing initial visitor contact. - The Guide is also responsible for providing information about the museum's exhibits, which allows them to explain an exhibit or artifact's significance, and answer any questions that guests might have. Educational Tour Guides: - Our Educational Tour Guides volunteer to deliver walking curriculum-based tours approximately 45 minutes in length as support for Manitoba's grade 6 and grade 9 science or physics curriculum in electricity. - The tours are based upon a script and usually school classes are divided in two such that the time commitment is 2 hours. - Some of our guides also provide educational programming for the grade 9 students by demonstrating static electricity using a Van de Graaff generator, allowing students fun and hands on experiences. |
Skills Required: | Knowledge of museum exhibits and collections, and how to explain them - which we provide the training Good public speaking and presentation skills Able to work independently as well as in a team environment Attention to detail Enjoys interacting with people Experience of communicating with a wide range of people, of different generations and from different cultural backgrounds. Confidence to present a positive image of self and the Museum. Ability to work effectively as part of a team |

Time Commitment: | Daytime, Weekend Daytime General Tour Guides - we ask at a minimum to volunteer for 2 shifts a month Tuesday through Saturday 1 pm to 4 pm. Educational Tour Guides - Volunteering as available as tour are being arranged. Hours are flexible. |
