Organizational Description: About FIXT POINT's previous work:
To date, we've interviewed over 3,000 Canadians from every province and territory in almost 200 communities in our storymobiles (mobile recording studio on wheels); edited and posted hundreds of oral histories on our storymap; produced two seasons of a TV/web series for TVO; and, most recently, we were awarded Touring Artist of the Year from the Canadian Arts Presenting Association (CAPACOA).

Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The Empathy Squad program trains and equips youth from across Canada to generate empathy-building dialogue through the collection of stories via interviews and the creation of podcast pieces.

Program Expectations:
-attend scheduled Zoom sessions that consist of live demonstrations, instructional videos and feedback sharing from facilitators, Guest Artists and peers;
-apply learnings by conducting interviews, using audio recording equipment, and completing assignments using audio-editing software, Descript;
-engage with facilitators and peers using program communication platforms (Slack, Zoom, provided Empathy Squad email address);
-commit 10-12 hours a week, including scheduled Zoom sessions and work in your own time.


The program is delivered virtually and provides opportunities for developing skills and artistic practice to capture and preserve community stories to be shared with present and future generations, as well as opportunities for improving your communication and self-expression skills! Oral storytelling forges connections between people and ideas, makes information more accessible, and helps us understand the ties that bind us. Oral history nuances the stories of the past and present, helps us understand how communities experience history, and allows us to learn together on the path towards a shared future.

Amplify voices, centre overlooked stories, and celebrate the unsung heroes in your community. You'll have the chance to collect stories, learn podcasting skills, meet new people from different walks of life, and collaborate with future leaders across the country. Skills Required: The Empathy Squad is designed for people with varying backgrounds and prior experience in interviewing, audio recording, audio editing, narrative shaping, and podcast creation. You will get trained side-by-side your peers and learn from facilitators as well as industry professionals in your process of creating a podcast piece in service of your community.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: As a participant, you too can:
* Acquire the knowledge and practical skills needed to produce high-quality audio stories - interviewing and recording techniques, narrative shaping, and audio-editing.
* Volunteer in service of your community, learn about what's important to them through active listening and help foster empathy for their lived experiences;
* Experience hands-on learning alongside fellow future leaders and from industry professionals across the country.

Successful participants we've had were those who:
-Have a community whose stories they would like to centre;
-Have a subject of interest that they want to explore and develop further;
-Want to pursue their studies and/or a career in the arts, culture and heritage, media, and communications sectors;
-Want to improve their skills in interviewing, communication, and self-expression;
-Are passionate about the podcasting industry and about gaining audio skills.

Join over 100 youth volunteers who have completed the Empathy Squad and used podcasting to engage and amplify the voices of their communities across Canada!

Other program details:
-Meet and learn from our guest artists: Industry professionals who will come and talk about their work process and help you in yours!
-Internet stipend: each member receives internet stipend for attending our Zoom sessions.
-Provided meals: For selected longer Zoom sessions, food vouchers for delivery apps will be provided.
