Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | Senior 1-2-1 peer outreach program helps connect participants recovering from mental illness with senior volunteers that have their own lived experience with mental illness. As a volunteer you will meet with the participant at a public place such as a coffee shop, and then engage in a conversation about whatever the participant wants to discuss. The program helps participants in recovery while also aiding them in building some of the social skills that were lost because of pandemic isolation. Duties include: - Willingness to attend 1-2-1 Peer Outreach Training on safety, peer support, and crisis management - Provide availability and attend all scheduled 1-2-1 Peer Outreach Volunteer shifts - Provide person-centered, strength-based caring and compassionate Peer Support - Use database to review, contact and effectively schedule community visits with participants - Review and confirm a transit schedule, that will ensure arrival on or before the stated time - Document and input necessary program evaluation data and information |
Skills Required: | - Personal lived experience of mental health, substance use and/or addiction challenges - A level of recovery necessary to effectively provide mental health Peer Support to others - Understand the importance of Peer Support to mental health and wellness recovery - An unbiased understanding of mental health system and resources available - The ability to consistently demonstrate discretion, confidentiality and professionalism - Good critical-thinking, problem-solving and decision-making skills - Strong written and verbal communications skills in English and/or French - To function in a demanding and stressful environment - Be able to successfully demonstrate dependability and reliability - Must have own cell phone (for program communication and safety only) - Current and satisfactory checks for Criminal Record, Adult and Child Abuse Registry - Checks are not necessary to apply for the position |
