Organizational Description: The Koru Centre Inc. is a newly founded nonprofit organization with the mission to bring freedom and healing to survivors of sexual violence through community efforts that does not discriminate based on age, job, economics status, sex, race, gender or religion. We are a centre that supports survivors at every point in their healing journey, may it be at the beginning or later on. We aim to be a community support to be there for survivors who are dealing with their personal trauma. We also aim to be a support for the secondary victims of sexual violence, these being parents, friends, partners and loved ones of survivors.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: As a volunteer counsellor you will be expected to work with survivors of sexual violence during their most challenging and vulnerable times which means that you will be expected to be trauma-informed. Sessions will be one-on-one and counsellors must be able to recognize when they need to refer clients to other specialists.
Skills Required: -Post-secondary degree in the social services field (i.e. Social Work) and over 2 years of experience.
-Experience providing short-term or long-term, and/or crisis counselling to individuals who have been impacted by sexual violence, gender-based violence, mental health, and complex trauma.
-Providing trauma-informed care.
-Experience working with individuals as well as providing group therapy.
-Being a culturally sensitive individual who does not hold bias against any groups
Knowledge of the resources available in the community to individual experiencing gender-based violence, and other barriers.
Ability to work independently and demonstrated decision making abilities.
Satisfactory Criminal Record, Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check (cannot start volunteering until all of those have been submitted)

Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
As this is an unpaid position there is quite a bit of flexibility with your hours, mainly being evenings and weekends. There is no limit to the amount of hours that can be worked. At this time we do not operate out of an office, so all appointments and meetings will be held remotely.
