Organizational Description: The Portage Learning and Literacy Centre is a not-for-profit organization providing individuals of the Central Plains region with opportunities to realize their education, employment, and life goals through a positive and supportive environment.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: -Volunteer orientation sessions will include basic program information and an outline of newcomer settlement needs.
-Suggested guidelines for community orientation will be provided.
-Be a model of English use.
Skills Required: -Knowledge and familiarity of the community and its services and resources.
-Strong commitment to the English language.
-Being multi-lingual is an asset e.g. Hindi, Ukrainian, German, etc.
-Ability to meet and build relationships.
-A valid and current driver's license.
-A valid and current Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check must be submitted prior to engaging with newcomers and their families.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: -Be a warm and friendly representative of the community.
-Greet and welcome the new family as soon as possible.
-Provide community information on shopping, schools, recreation, and other resources.
-Provide guided tours of the community to point out areas of importance and interest.
-Answer questions about their new community, local culture, services, etc.
-Provide regular reports to the Volunteer Coordinator and Settlement Services Coordinator.
