Organizational Description: Habitat for Humanity Manitoba (HFHM) provides low-income families the opportunity of home ownership through its unique business model of offering no down payment,no interest mortgages. Monthly mortgage payments received by Habitat are used to purchase more land which enables donations to keep on giving - building more homes, more hope and more thriving communities. By mobilizing volunteers and community partners, Habitat for Humanity Manitoba works with people from all walks of life to build safe, decent, affordable housing for purchase by low-income working families.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Critical Repair Program Volunteer
Habitat for Humanity Manitoba's Critical Repair Program is an upcoming initiative that will help low-income homeowners complete essential repairs on their homes. These repairs will enable families to stay in their own home, which will become safe and habitable. Habitat is actively recruiting skilled volunteers to help complete these critical repairs. Candidates will have the ability to commit on a part time, flexible basis (weekdays only) for 7.5 hours on average. Skills Required: The skills required may include, but are not limited to carpentry, drywall installation, patching and painting, landscaping and other household repair skills. The ideal volunteer will have excellent personal as well as general 'handyman/woman' skills.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Skills gained would be compassion and empathy while working with others who need a 'hand up, the ability to work cooperatively in in small teams while working independently at times, honing your handyman skills through practice, and possibly learning some new skills. Related careers include carpentry, construction helper and other careers in the Trades.
