Organizational Description: Alzheimer Society of Manitoba helps all Manitobans affected by dementia. What started as a grassroots movement over 35 years ago, is now an organization that has developed into the leading resource for families living with the disease.

The Society provides programs and services to enhance the quality of life for those affected. The aim is to bring dignity, inclusion, respect and acceptance into the lives of people with dementia and their care partners.

Currently, there are over 22,500 Manitobans living with dementia. The Society offers: supportive counselling, caregiver and professional education, support groups for people with dementia and for their care partners, public awareness,, the Medic Alert Safely Home program, the First Link program, Minds in Motion program, research funding and more. The Society is a prominent voice in advocating for change within all levels of government.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: Alzheimer Society of Manitoba is looking for volunteer facilitators who are compassionate, good listeners and excited to work with seniors and their family members. Support Group facilitators assist in running and co-facilitating our on-going in-person support groups for care partners who are supporting someone living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

Support Groups are offered on a monthly basis at various times of day to support care partners as they care for a person living with Alzheimer's or another dementia. Volunteer facilitators are expected to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for care partners to share their experiences.

Support Group Facilitators encourage care partners to share their experiences with one another and encourage other group members to offer peer support. Support Group Facilitators will provide a compassionate presence and listening ear as they hold space for a variety of care partner experiences. Support Group Facilitators are required to have strong interpersonal communication skills. Professional training in a related field an asset.

Please note a criminal record check and vulnerable sector check will need to be completed for this role.

Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening
Currently openings for daytime and evening in-person support group opportunities. Volunteers are assigned to one support group per month with a monthly time commitment of 2.5 hours.
