Organizational Description: Since 1957, A & O: Support Services for Older Adults has been providing specialized social services to older adults. Our programs fall under 3 pillars of service: Safety & Security, Social Engagement and Counselling. Last year, we helped over 27,000 older Manitobans.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: The SafetyAid: Falls Prevention Program provides older adults with interventions to prevent falls and gain a greater sense of safety in their home, which will allow older adults to increase their independence and engage in meaningful activities.

Volunteers in this program deliver tech support over the telephone to older adults who are having difficulty joining online exercise classes

Duties include:
- Assisting older adults to join scheduled Zoom exercise classes remotely using plain language and simple instructions
- Checking phone messages and returning calls to clients
- Helping older adults navigate their tablet computer, including how to log into their tablet and check email
- Troubleshooting common issues, such as tablet being on airplane mode or not being connected to data
- Respecting the confidentiality of the client
Skills Required: - Ability to communicate with others on a one-to-one basis in a patient, understanding, caring, and sensitive manner
- Proficiency using Android tablet and Zoom
- Ability to describe complex steps in easy to understand terms and in different ways
- Ability to maintain boundaries
- Interest in working with older adults

Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime
- 1.5 to 2.25 hours per week (30-45 minutes per exercise class) - Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 11:15am to 12:00pm - An additional 15 minutes/class may be needed at the beginning of term - Additional time may be required for training and reporting
