Volunteer Opportunity Details | |
Description of Duties: | The Volunteer Housing Mentor will support the Housing team by establishing and maintaining relationships with guests who attend the 1JustCity drop-in sites. Mentors will work with guests to understand their needs related to housing and provide short-term support to guests which may include helping guests look for housing vacancies, printing out applications, referring to community resources, listening and talking through guests' housing challenges, and helping guests fill out applications. Volunteers will be supported and supervised by Just a Warm Sleep's Program Lead and Housing Support Worker throughout their work with guests. |
Skills Required: | - Willingness to learn about resources for individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, mental health challenges, substance use, and gender-based violence. - Willingness to learn anti-oppressive, cultural humility, pro-choice, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction principles. - Strong interpersonal and listening skills and ability to build relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds. - Ability to work from a non-judgemental and accepting attitude, and seeks to understand guests' feelings, needs, values, and opinions. - Demonstrates analytical and problem-solving skills. - Ability to practice personal-professional boundaries. - Ability to work independently and as a team member. |

Time Commitment: | Daytime - Commitment is one 4-hour shift per week. - Opportunities are currently available at the Oak Table site at 107 Pulford St. from 11:30 am - 3:30 pm. - Opportunities will be available at the Westend site at 365 McGee in the future. - From December to March, there will be opportunities to work at the Just a Warm Sleep Shelter in the evenings. |
