Organizational Description: The Fort Garry Rotary Villa is an Independent Living Block for Older Adults located in the heart of Fort Garry. We have 123 units and offer congregate meals for lunch and dinner. Our Tenant Resource Team has ongoing activities, events and programs that are run with support from tenants, volunteers and practicum students from Red River Polytechnic, Assiniboine College and the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Social Work. We strive to promote Healthy Aging with funding from Support Services to Seniors and to foster partnerships within community to ensure Older Adults can age in place. Our location is easy to access via transit and we are situated close to schools, churches, shopping and bike trails. We are fortunate to have community gardens and access to green spaces indoors and out making our community a vibrant and unique home for low income older adults.
Volunteer Opportunity Details
Description of Duties: We are looking for a people person with experience in handling cash and serving in a client facing role. All of our in house activities are funded by our residents and we have had to pivot during the pandemic to look at new revenue streams to help support our goals and address food insecurity in our block. So by creating our own mini-convenience store on site we help our clients access basic food items and sundries. We are looking for a volunteer to help support this endeavor and fill in the gaps for when staff are unavailable.
Skills Required: People person with patient disposition. Basic inventory skills and handling of cash float.
Skills Gained/Related Careers: Customer service, fundraising, community development.
Age: 18-30, 31-54, 55+
Time Commitment: Daytime, Evening, Weekend
There is no specific time frame for this role as we are just working towards establishing the program. Several candidates or team members may be able to identify availability to round out times frames that are suitable. Peak time frames that may be suitable are weekdays from 11 AM- noon or 5-6 PM, OR weekends from 1-2 PM. Please contact us if you are interested. We are very flexible in terms of days/hours set.
